Permanent makeup is cosmetic tattooing that involves injecting colored pigment into the skin to fill out the eyebrows, provide eyes with liner, and add color to lips. Permanent makeup sits under the dermal layer of skin, cannot be washed off, and lasts one to five years depending on the individual and how well it’s cared for. Here’s a quick guide to permanent makeup if you’re interested in application or recently had the procedure done.
1. Always Use Sun Protection
Prevent premature makeup fading by staying out of the sun. Apply sunscreen or a protective moisturizer before you go outdoors, regardless of the time of year. Wear hats and sunglasses when you venture outside during the day and avoid tanning beds. Also, keep in mind that lighter ink fades quicker than dark hues.
2. Avoid Exfoliating Products
permanent makeupExfoliating products slough dead skin and encourage cell turnover, diminishing the look of permanent makeup. Be wary of products containing Retin-A, a vitamin that speeds up the cell turnover process. Limit use of exfoliating products to areas of the skin affected by cosmetic tattooing. This includes all alpha hydroxy cleaners, moisturizers, grainy facial exfoliants, chemical peels, and masks.
3. Use High-Quality Moisturizer & Drink Plenty of Water
Moisture-deprived skin flakes, resulting in permanent makeup that looks faded or cracked. Use a high-quality, exfoliant-free moisturizer during the day and a thicker version at night. Make certain you’re drinking at least eight cups of water a day to keep skin plump and supple. Avoid dehydrating beverages like soda and alcohol.
